Smart Glass & Switchable Privacy Film in NYC
NYC Glass & Window Repair installs smart glass and switchable privacy film for offices, conference rooms, healthcare spaces, hotels, retail interiors and high-end residences. We work with owners, architects, designers, GCs and building managers on new smart-glass systems and retrofit PDLC film for suitable existing glass.
A successful project requires more than applying film. Glass condition, panel dimensions, wiring, transformer location, controls, edge conditions, moisture exposure, door movement and electrical coordination all affect the result.

What Is PDLC Smart Glass?
PDLC stands for polymer-dispersed liquid crystal. Liquid-crystal droplets are dispersed in a polymer layer. Unpowered, the crystals scatter light and the panel looks frosted; powered, they align and the panel becomes substantially more transparent. Smart glass does not become optically identical to ordinary clear glass: some haze remains depending on product, angle and lighting.
Smart Glass vs. Smart Film
Smart glass is factory-manufactured with the switchable layer laminated within the glazing, suited to new construction, replacement glass, doors and architectural applications. Smart film is a retrofit applied to suitable existing glass, attractive for occupied offices and renovations. The better choice depends on whether glass is installed, exposure, durability, edge protection and budget.
How It Switches
Standard PDLC is private when power is OFF and more transparent when ON. Switching is rapid, though response and clarity depend on the product. Reverse-state technologies exist and should be specified explicitly.
Retrofit Film vs. Factory-Laminated Glass
Retrofit Smart Film for Existing Glass
Existing partitions, office fronts and interior windows can often be upgraded with adhesive PDLC film without replacing the glass. The surface must suit the product and be prepared meticulously, since dust and imperfections stay visible under the film. Film is custom sized per lite, with busbars and wiring positioned to be concealed. It is not suitable for every surface; glass type, coatings, moisture and manufacturer restrictions come first.
Factory-Laminated Smart Glass
The active layer sits between glass plies for a durable finished product. Dimensions, holes, notches, hardware cutouts and lead location must be coordinated before fabrication, as field modification is very limited. Exterior or insulated applications need a configuration designed for that exposure.
Applications
Offices & Conference Rooms
Smart glass lets a conference room stay transparent for collaboration and switch to private for meetings, in law firms, financial offices, HR and interview rooms. It provides visual privacy only; speech privacy depends on the full partition assembly, so see Custom Glass Partitions.
Healthcare
Consultation and treatment areas can use switchable glass instead of curtains or blinds, following the facility's hygiene, electrical and privacy requirements. Smart glass is not inherently HIPAA compliant.
Residential & Bathrooms
Apartments, townhouses and luxury homes use smart glass for home offices, bedroom dividers, bathroom windows and glass doors. Not every retrofit film is designed for wet exposure; near showers or tubs use only a configuration approved by the manufacturer for that exposure.
Hotels, Retail & Projection
Hospitality uses switchable glass for bathroom partitions, suites and private dining. Retail uses it for interior storefront partitions and displays; exterior use requires a product designed for weather and solar load. Many PDLC products act as a diffuse projection surface in the frosted state, with quality dependent on the product and projector.
Controls, Transformers & Electrical Coordination
Control options include wall switch, remote, relay or contact closure, timer or occupancy logic, compatible smartphone or home-automation interface, and building-management or AV integration. Compatibility with Lutron, Crestron, Control4, Apple Home, Alexa or a BMS is confirmed for the actual interface.
PDLC requires power through a manufacturer-compatible transformer. The design establishes transformer location and service access, where wires exit each panel and how wiring is concealed. Electrical work is performed by the appropriately qualified trade, and scopes are defined before fabrication so busbars and leads are never left exposed or in conflict with frames and doors.
Installation Quality, Edges & Doors
Smart film is visually unforgiving. Dust, fingerprints and scratches remain visible, so glass and work area need careful preparation, and film follows the manufacturer's edge tolerances and procedure. Busbars and leads are positioned intentionally, and exposed edges may need manufacturer-approved sealing. On frameless partitions, hiding connections is harder than on framed systems, so wiring strategy is part of design.
Moving glass doors need flexible power-transfer solutions so wires do not fatigue or pinch. For new doors, factory-laminated glass may be preferable.
Smart Glass vs. Frosted Film, Blinds & Solar Film
Permanent frosted film is simpler and cheaper if fixed privacy is acceptable. Smart film suits variable privacy. Privacy glass is not a full substitute for shades, which can provide blackout and solar management.
PDLC smart film and solar-control film are different technologies. PDLC provides switchable visual privacy; solar-control and UV films manage heat, glare and UV, and their performance should not be assumed for a PDLC product without documentation. UV is only one contributor to fading, so we use manufacturer values for the exact film proposed. Film compatibility with insulated, laminated, tinted or coated glass follows manufacturer guidance. We can evaluate architectural films from established manufacturers such as 3M, Llumar and Solar Gard according to project needs.
Maintenance, Repair, Cost & Logistics
Clean with methods compatible with the product; abrasives, harsh chemicals and moisture at electrical edges can damage film. Common problems include contamination, bubbles, damaged edges, exposed wiring, inconsistent switching and loose connections. Diagnosis separates electrical faults from film damage. Physical damage, delamination or internal failure may require replacing the film or panel, and third-party systems need identification of manufacturer and controller before parts are changed.
Cost depends on square footage, laminated vs. retrofit, panel count, shapes, controls, wiring, transformers, access and glass replacement. NYC high-rise projects may require COIs, freight elevators and restricted hours, plus access to electrical connection points. Send glass dimensions, photos, drawings, control method and whether existing glass remains.

Our Process
- Project review. Review photos, drawings, dimensions, glass type and privacy goals.
- Site evaluation. Inspect existing glass, framing, doors, access and wire and transformer locations.
- Product selection. Choose retrofit PDLC film, laminated smart glass or conventional privacy or solar film.
- Electrical and control coordination. Confirm transformer, wire exits, switching method and responsibility for connections.
- Final measurement and fabrication. Verify each panel and order or fabricate the selected product.
- Installation. Prepare the glass and site, then install film or smart-glass panels.
- Commissioning and final review. Qualified electrical work is completed, switching tested and appearance inspected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Smart glass typically integrates the switchable layer within a manufactured glass panel, while smart film can be applied to suitable existing glass as a retrofit. The better choice depends on the project, exposure, durability, appearance and budget.
Standard PDLC systems are generally frosted and private when unpowered and more transparent when powered. Reverse-state technologies also exist, so confirm the exact product specification.
Often, yes, if the glass surface, coatings, exposure and edge conditions are compatible with the selected product.
No. Even in the transparent state, PDLC products can retain some haze, varying by product, lighting and viewing angle.
Switchable privacy primarily addresses visual privacy. Acoustic performance depends on the complete glass and partition assembly, framing, seals and doors.
Potentially, but product suitability, edge protection, moisture exposure and electrical requirements must be evaluated. Not every adhesive smart film is designed for direct wet exposure.
Yes, depending on the selected controller and interface. Wall switches, remotes, relays and compatible automation integrations can be designed, but compatibility should be confirmed for the actual system.
Some products publish solar and UV performance, but PDLC's primary purpose is switchable privacy. For dedicated heat, glare or UV control, compare documented performance with purpose-built solar-control film.
Some electrical or connection problems can be diagnosed and serviced. Physical damage, delamination or internal failure may require replacement.
